NORTHBOROUGH _ The Core Connection, LLC will be raising funds to help fight breast cancer, in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In 2012, the Northborough-based fitness company raised $1,100 for the Susan G. Komen® for the Cure last October.  This was achieved through the dedication of the company’s founder Rita Matraia, and her instructors who offered nine classes with the only cost being a donation to benefit breast cancer research. Several instructors donated both their time and their paychecks.

This year, Matraia and her instructors will be offering a similar type of program with all donations benefiting the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Worcester, with a goal of exceeding last year’s donation.

“We will offer several free classes the week of October 6 which are open to anyone. Last year, our clients were extremely generous, and we’re hoping they will come through once again for such a worthy cause,” Matraia said. “In addition to providing the community with free classes, we will donate 50 percent of the cost of all unlimited class passes purchased in the month of October to The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Worcester.”

Matraia has formed a Core Connection team for the Making Strides for Worcester Walk that will take place on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., at 2013 at ElmPark, Worcester.

“We are hoping many clients and instructors will join us and be part of this worthwhile cause,” Matraia said.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer offers the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the country. In 2012, over one million walkers participated in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events across the nation, and $68 million was raised.

The nonprofit organization was founded by cancer survivor Margery Gould Rath in 1984 to celebrate fellow cancer survivors. These walks range between 3 to 5 miles, and are designed as a way to honor breast cancer survivors, as well as to raise both awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research, information and services, and to help women maintain consistent access to mammograms.

“We have several clients who are currently affected by breast cancer or who are survivors. We want them to know how much we want to help them, and that we are committed to doing our part to inspire a community as they return to improved health,” Matraia said. “With every donation, we are making a difference in the lives of those afflicted with this disease.”
